We run a mobile library visiting rural schools on the Lower South Coast of KZN.

Sithanda ukufunda – We love to read aims to enhance literacy levels in schools
on the Lower South Coast of KZN and adjoining areas of the Eastern Cape.

We want to help learners to read and to love reading by providing picture books and story books to children in less-advantaged, mostly rural schools.

The project, which functions as a small mobile library is now in its twelve year of operation and has grown significantly.

No matter how busy you may think you are, you must find time for reading or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance.

Comments from some of the teachers.

They were so excited they even wanted to read all the time.

They (the learners) were happy and the teachers were excited to have the box in the classroom.

They dive into the box like into a Christmas cake!!

The books are so lovely.  They help us so much.  Some of the easy Gr 4 books we use in Gr 3.

They read the books and did summaries.  They also read with the teacher – they needed lots of support and help with pronunciation.

The books help us so much.  Now they can read better.

Currently we take books to 18 primary schools and 5 secondary schools

We also read aloud to classes at schools in our area

We organise “Reading with Meaning” workshops for teachers, facilitated by LITASA and the ‘Read to Learn’ organisation

I have a passion for teaching kids to become readers,
to become comfortable with a book, not daunted.

Books shouldn’t be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful;
and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage.

Most of our books are donated by friends, businesses and more affluent schools on the South Coast and in Johannesburg.

Many of the books are much loved, much read books which their original owners have read and read.

Others are wonderful new books donated by people with a vision for the importance of enhancing the literacy levels of the learners in our schools.

Today the project employs two part-time assistants and has a budget exceeding R200K a year.

It is estimated that a minimum of 20 000 young learners benefit from this program every year.

An indication of the improvement in reading has been the Phendulani Quiz held annually in which 10 of the schools compete.
Over the years we have seen a steady improvement in many of the schools.

In 2024 the winning school entered the competition for the first time two years early and came last.

We believe that the project makes a difference and this is confirmed
by the enthusiasm shown by both educators and learners every time we visit a school.
